Sabian Symbol: “An Old Adobe Mission in California”

“…missions were small agricultural communities built to house local Native populations while they were educated in the Spanish way of life. Most Native people brought to live in missions had very little choice in the matter. While they learned about the Catholic religion and Spanish agriculture and cultural practices, they were forced to live and work in inhumane conditions, producing goods that would enrich the Spanish. Some Spanish officials viewed the Native people in the missions as slaves.”

The “missions” in this Sabian embody the foundational values that we build our lives around. As an emblem for this New Moon, the Symbol asks us to re-evaluate these values, and decide whether or not something needs to change. What is our life centered around at the moment — materialism, spirituality, love, creativity, or perhaps fear? Do our beliefs and values also benefit the community in some way? What will be our legacy when we are gone?

The Sabian Symbol that comes afterward (2 degrees Aquarius) is called “An Unexpected Thunderstorm”. This is the equivalent of the “Tower” card in the Tarot. If our current “structures” and values don’t serve our evolution anymore, they WILL have to be wiped out, so we can start on a clean slate.

Back to Aquarius at 1 degree. Another thing is that if we have been living on autopilot for a while now, this will be highlighted. The Sabian and New Moon energy are pushing us to let more spontaneity, creativity, and magic into our lives. Have we been living as “mind” creatures rather than true spiritual creators? Aquarius energy always asks us to frequently shake things up in our lives and routines, to allow space for serendipity to happen. The first degree is also an Aries degree, so it’s even more crucial to be bold and get out of our comfort zones in the search for new horizons.

Also, this isn’t just “any” structure, it’s a mission! It’s a place where we go to commune with God, a.k.a our Spirit. Have we built our missions, our frequent spiritual practice? Are we connected to our intuition or are we exclusively listening to the mind? Dogma and inflexibility are born out of fear, and fear can only enter through the mind. So, if you have been kind of “stuck” and hesitant to experiment with your life, this is the time to embrace change.

Part of Gene Key 60 (Limitation -> Realism > Justice)

Now, let’s see how all of this pairs with the meaning of Gene Key 60 which is part of the Codon Ring of Gaia, a.k.a Mother Earth. The Shadow vibration is called “Limitation” and simply put, it speaks of our relationship with structure — both in our personal lives but also with the current systems in the world.

Essentially, the Shadow drives us to approach structure in two ways — we either try to avoid it at all costs or we cling to it for dear life because of the perceived “security” it gives us. Both ways are limiting. If we drift aimlessly in life because we are afraid to commit to our ideals, we become the “all talk, no action” kind of people, and our potential as creators goes to waste. On the other hand, too much structure and rigidness suck all the juice out of life, leaving no space for spontaneity and magic to occur. We become stuck in our ways and miss out on many opportunities to create a meaningful life.

Pluto has been going through the last degrees of Capricorn for the past few years, and they are part of this Gene Key’s influence. I feel like this New Moon is just a little “taste” of what’s about to come to the spotlight when Pluto leaps into Aquarius in March, and through all of the periods, it’s going to stay at the 1st degree. We are at the stage where we are starting to realize more clearly that we aren’t as free as we thought. The systems initially meant to serve as our “shelter” and protection have become more like prisons that limit our scope of creativity, growth, and evolution. Not only that, but the thirst for power, money, and control has been detrimental to the entire planet, and all creatures that live on it!

So, as we see, the shadow of this GK points directly to what we learned about the Sabian. The Spanish missionaries gave shelter to the “uneducated” natives in return for their freedom of thinking and living. Does this sound like a fair deal?

Life is insecure. There is nothing outside which can give us the safety and stability we seek. In fact, this realization can help us let go of the need for security, altogether, and embrace change and unpredictability.

The Gift vibration is called “Realism”, and it unfolds when we manage to have a playful, light approach to structures, to see them for what they are — vessels that carry our ideas out into the world. Each and every structure is bound to fall apart, eventually, and this is the truth we need to come to terms with. This is why you can build with the “adobe” you have available, use the structure as long as it serves you, and let it go once it has fulfilled its purpose. The only constant in life is change and I feel like, many of us cling to the status quo and habits as if they are lifebelts. Especially now, that life has become so uncertain and shaky, we can individually assess the extent to which we allow fear to grip us.

However, that’s the case with the last degrees of any sign. E.g, if you have late-degree Capricorn placements in your chart, you might have experienced how they can act in rigid and controlling ways. Gene Key 60 clearly shows the “bridge” between the conservative, power-hungry nature of late Capricorn degrees and the desire for freedom and equality of Aquarius. And mind you, I am not idealizing the first degrees of Aquarius, either. They are among the most volatile and rebellious because the energy isn’t mature, yet. This is no “quiet revolution” type of energy, it’s a “get the fuck out of my face!” type of vibe, and it might be exactly what we see in the next few years.

How can we be playful if we remain trapped in fearful thinking and anxiety about our survival and the future, in general? This is the challenge we are facing now. Like sheep, we’ll continue to seek a “shepherd” to lead us and own us, until we learn how to think for ourselves, but also rely on each other more. Humans helping other humans instead of placing all of our trust in the hands of centralized government, for example. The internet has been a great leap in that direction, but we are still not free — far from it.

In the Age of Aquarius, and especially during the next 10–20 years, we will need to move away from Saturn and reach the Sky, Uranus. We’ll need to become Uranian beings, which means learning how to embrace change, unpredictability, and the total absence of logic, at times. If we want to thrive, we’ll need to learn how to use tools and practices (Astrology is one of them) to tune in to Spirit, which is the only way to become truly fearless and playful in life. I feel like by the time Pluto exits Aquarius, all of us will be some sort of spiritually elevated, mad hatter types, and I am here for it! Pour the tea! 🍵😂
